Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which stimulation of a sensory sense leads to involuntary experiences in a second sense. If you hear music, and see shapes simultaneously this is Synestesia. Or you hear a word or a name and instantly see a color. It’s not a disease or a disorder. It’s just a unique way to experience life.
The word "synesthesia" has Greek roots. It translates to “perceive together.” People who have this ability are called synesthetes. There are many different varieties and each synesthete is unique. One of the most common responses is to see letters, numbers, or sounds as colors. Some people see music in shapes and colors, some may have a perception of taste and smell, and in their fingertips, they may even feel a texture.
There are many famous artists with synesthesia such as Vladimir Nabokov, Pharrell Williams, and Vincent Van Gogh! Pharrel is one of the most famous synesthetes of the modern era. He sees his condition as an asset for his creative expression rather than a disorder. He relies heavily on his chromesthesia, which is a type of synesthesia that makes you see colors when hearing music when he is creating new music. He once said in an interview that his song Happy is mostly yellow!
